What role do songs play in a musical?
Songs have a dramatic function that are an integral part of the storytelling: They help to develop character and/or move the action of the plot forward. In musicals, it is a general rule that characters break into song when the emotional stakes have become so high that ordinary speech fails them. Through their songs, the characters can reveal their innermost thoughts, fears, hopes & dreams, grapple with difficult decisions & come to important realisations about themselves.
Musical theatre lyrics use many poetic devises, including rhythm, rhyme, repetition, figurative language, symbolism & metaphor.
CLIP FROM OUR FIRST WORKSHOP WITH LAUREN in 2019
During our first Workshop with Lauren, we worked on two contrasting styles of musical theatre singing - classical vs modern. Lauren's classical training & knowledge as an opera singer is extraordinary. It was amazing to see & hear what a huge difference she made in our singer's understanding and approach to this material. Lauren got us ready to perform our arrangement of 'Come To my Garden' from The Secret Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show later that year. We also had a blast working on a modern, twangy 'Broadway' sound for her arrangement of 'There's No Business Like Show Business!'.
